Sonic Frontiers is a 3D platformer and action-adventure game, and the first Sonic the Hedgehog game to feature an open world, which writers compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017). As Sonic, the player explores the Starfall Islands, which comprise various biomes including flowery fields, forests, ancient ruins, and deserts.

Sonic retains his abilities from previous games: he runs at high speeds, collects rings, and grinds on rails.The player battles robots throughout the islands, with gameplay blending Sonic's traditional abilities with combat.
